Minors

A minor can make a major difference

Consider adding a minor to your course of study. A minor can:

A minor consists of a minimum of 18 credits (9 credits above the 100 level, of which 6 must be at the 300 or 400 level).

We offer minors through most of our academic departments and a wide array of interdisciplinary minors. The table below indicates the requirements for each of the minors. Clicking on the name of the program will take you to more information about specific requirements for the minor or to the department's home page.  In addition, Arts and Sciences students may pursue a minor in the business school.

African American Studies: 18 credits, including African American History I and African American History II, plus 4 courses from approved list, including Intro to African-American Studies American Studies (Walt Whitman Program): minors are available in general American Studies or Walt Whitman option.
18 credits, including Intro. to American Studies, American Studies Seminar, plus 4 courses from approved list. 		Art/Art History: minors are available in Electronic Arts, Animation, Graphic Design, Studio Art, and Art History. See also Museum Studies below.
18 credits, at least six of which must be above the 100 level and at least six of which must be at the 300 or 400 level.
Anthropology:  18 credits selected from anthropology offerings. Intro. to Cultural Anthropology is recommended before enrolling in any upper-level anthropology courses. Biological Sciences:  minors are available in Biology, Botany, Zoology. 18 credits; 10 of which must be above 100 level and 6 of which must be at the 300 or 400 level.
Chemistry:   Requires 12 courses; as specified courses listed in the catalog.
Childhood Studies:  18 credits, including Intro. to Childhood Studies, Capstone Experience in Childhood Studies, plus four elective courses from approved list. No more than 6 credits from the major field of study may be applied to the Childhood Studies minor. Classical Studies:  18 credits including World Masterpieces I. At least 9 credits at or above 300 level; no more than 6 credits at the 100 level. Latin 101 and 102 advisable but not required. Computer Science:  18 credits. Must complete following courses with a grade of C or better: 50:198:111, 50:198:112, 50:198:113, 50:198:114, 50:198:221, 50:198:231 and at least 2 additional computer science courses numbered 200 or above.
Criminal Justice:  21 credits; 9 core credits, including 50:203:201 and two courses selected from 50:203:202, 203 and 204, and either 50:920:316 or 332 plus two additional upper-level criminal justice courses. Economics:  18 credits selected from departmental offerings. English:  minors are available in American Literature, Communication, English Literature, English, Irish Literature, Journalism, Linguistics, Writing.
18 appropriate credits (exclusive of 50:350:101/102 and 219) taught in the Department of English. All courses must be at the 200 level or above and 6 credits of the minor must be in courses at the 300 or 400 level.
Ethics:  18 credits. At least 4 courses must be from among the following: Philosophy 226, 260, 315, 319, 320, 349 and 361; Religion 332, 335, 340 and 349. The remaining courses may be selected from elsewhere in the Dept. of Philosophy and Religion, or from approved courses with significant ethical content from other departments such as Sociology, Pychology and Criminal Justice. French:  18 credits in French beyond the elementary level (50:420:101, 102 or 50:420:108, 109), including at least 12 credits in courses numbered 200 or higher. A maximum of 6 credits in courses taught in English (those with numbers in the 240s, 305, 306, 360, 391, 392, or others if designated) may be taken for credit toward the French minor under the same conditions as for the French major. Film Studies:  18 credits drawn from the following areas of specialization: History, Genre Studies, International Film, Art of the Film, Practicum, Cinema and Society.
German:   18 credits in German beyond the elementary level (50:470:101, 102), including at least 12 credits in courses numbered 200 or above; no more than one course taught in English may be counted toward the minor. History:  18 credits, 12 of which must be earned in 300 to 400 level courses. Justice and Society:  18 credits of interdisciplinary work from courses in sociology or criminal justice, psychology, political science and philosophy.
Latin American Studies:  18 credits. Mathematics:  18 credits in mathematics, of which 9 credits must be at the 200 level or above, and 6 credits must be at the 300 level or above. Museum Studies:   18 credits selected from offerings in art history and related fields.
Philosophy: 18 credits, of which at least six must be at the 300 to 400 level. Philosophy and Religion: 18 credits. Nine of these must be in philosophy (730) and nine must be in religion (840). At least two courses must be at or above the 300 level. Physics:  18 credits; 10 of which must be above 100 level and 6 of which must be at the 300 or 400 level.
Political Science:   minors are available in General Political Science, International Politics, and Public Administration and Government Service. 18 credits. Psychology:  18 credits in psychology with 6 credits or more at or above the 300 level. Students must have a 2.5 GPA for the courses applied towards the minor; no more than one grade may be lower than a C. Psychology Minor for Management and Accounting Majors:  18 credits in psychology, including: Intro. to Psychology or Intro. to Social Psychology, and 5 of the following courses: 830:325, 341, 363, 371, 385 and 393. Students must have a 2.5 GPA in these courses.
Religion: 18 credits, of which at least two must be at the 300 level. Sociology:  18 credits in sociology, anthropology, and criminal justice. No specific courses in sociology are required except that Intro. to Sociology is recommended for all upper-level sociology courses. Spanish: 18 credits in Spanish courses, 12 of which must be above the 100 level.
Student Proposed Minor:  A student may design an arts and sciences interdepartmental minor.
18 credits, at least 9 of which must be chosen within one department at the 300 level or above.
Theater Arts: 18 credits. Introduction to Theater Arts, History of the Theater I or History of the Theater II or History of the Theater III. Two additional theater arts courses at the 200 level A minimum of two 300- to 400-level theater arts courses. Women's Studies:   18 credits, including Intro. to Women’s Studies, Senior Seminar in Women’s Studies, plus 4 courses from approved list See web site for eligible courses.
